It’s time to lace up those sneakers and dash to the finish line at the 9th annual Dove Dash and Pancake Breakfast. The event is an opportunity for the members of the community to spend time with their family and friends as they walk or run through beautiful Dove Canyon in support the charitable efforts of Ryan’s Reach. The Dash date is Sunday, March 21 and will begin at 8 a.m. at the corner of Dove Canyon Drive and Sycamore Drive. Sign up now! Early registration ends March 18.

All proceeds and donations for the Dove Dash go directly to Ryan’s Reach, an organization that seeks to aid brain injured individuals and their families with the necessary tools to provide a better life to victims. The charity envisions a nationwide network of High Hopes Neurological Recovery Group facilities to serve the complex needs of those affected by Traumatic Brain Injury.

The funds raised will help to provide financial resources and support for the community efforts and to aid in expanding the programs, services and outreach of High Hopes Neurological Recovery Group and Ryan’s Reach. By ensuring the victim’s well being we can contribute to the necessary and complex care of the victims to encourage them to continue to live a full and productive life in the midst of their potentially devastating injury.

The 5K Walk/Run race begins with a booming start and will finish at the pool with a free hearty pancake breakfast. Participants will have a beautiful view of the community as they trot through the rolling terrain. The course travels from a slight uphill for about 200 yards, and then continues to a gradual decent to the half-point mark. The route shifts back with a u-turn as the course takes a gradual ascent to the final quarter mile. At that point the groups will turn right down a steep descent followed by one last mild ascent to the finish.

This is an event for all ages so bring the whole family. The Dove Dash will also host a Kid Fun Run for ages 7 and under free of charge, and who doesn’t love a free pancake breakfast? But of course if you are a morning person, race day registration opens at 6:30 a.m. and parking will be available on location. Late registration fees apply after March 18th so sign up now!

Metals will be awarded to the top three teams and individuals in their respective age groups. The Dove Dash will triumph, rain or shine so lace up those sneakers and head on out the door. The residents of Orange County are proud to assist in the charitable efforts of Ryan’s Reach, now it’s your turn to touch the lives and hearts of others.

New Found Glory & Saves The Day Concert | House of Blues

“It’s your own life, live it for yourself.” Although these aren’t the first lyrics of the curtain opening song “Better Off Dead” by New Found Glory, they are hidden nuggets found when sifting through the lines. I always love watching shows at the House of Blues in Anaheim, particularly because it is a location at the heart of rock music, and a local home to many of my band familiarities.

New Found Glory is one of those “high school bands” that I recall with the early exploration of self expression. Whatever the sentiments and genre categorization of the band may be through its years, ranging from pop-punk and alternative rock to melodic hardcore (of which the last is a new term to me and I’m still having difficulty understanding), there will always be those songs that take me back to when I was 15 or 16 when the sound of guitars and drums seemed to say everything that I couldn’t. Sometimes the lyrics spoke volumes, sometimes they were, quite honestly, meaningless words thrown together, the spectrum didn’t matter all that much, it was the freedom to interpret that created the impression.

After sitting on the set list for a long while before writing this review, I revisited it in recollection and realized the concert had one unique trait that I have never seen an artist do before. New Found Glory played their entire self-titled album from song one to song twelve during the main showcase. The disc was released at the beginning of high school for me in 2000 yet performed ten years later. Anytime you are familiar with an album you can easily find yourself singing the first line of the next song to come next between the two-second track-breaks. I don’t think I realized it at the time but this is exactly what happened, and the set list followed the progression from start to finish with “Ballad For The Lost Romantics.”

With the full New Found Glory album under wraps, the concert’s six-song encore set had been the longest that I have ever experienced. The band continued with a hodgepodge of songs released between 2002 and 2009. I can’t say I followed along with their career past high school graduation so their newest “Don’t Let Her Pull You Down” from Not Without a Fight, and “Hold My Hand” from Coming Home were new sounds for my orientation. Their fresh and quite younger fan base seemed to rally with them though. In the final minutes, after introducing the band, the headliners closed with their 2002 hit “My Friends Over You” from Sticks and Stones, a relative throwback for the class of 2004.

I don’t normally backtrack in concert reviews, especially when the runner up band is one of my favorites, but I must in this case since I can’t give written authority of the full set list of Saves The Day that night. I’m limited to a frenzied memory of their songs performed since for the most part I was entrenched in singing along to every word completely in the moment. I do remember my excitement that’s for sure, but I can’t tell you the play-by-play.

Saves-The-Day-Through-Being-Cool“This song will become the anthem of your underground…” The first words of the echoing “At Your Funeral” from Saves The Day’s 2001 album Stay What You Are instantly bring me back to nostalgia for my youth. The highlights, or at least the songs that I will forever badly sing/yell along to, included that single along with “Shoulder At The Wheel” from their album in 1999, and my first love of theirs, Through Being Cool.

Thanks to my brother I was always a few years ahead of the trends in relation to my peers. Most of the time I heard the songs bellowing from his stereo years before my friends made the realization of the bands’ presence. I’m not gonnna lie, it made me feel pretty cool back in the day when I was able to say I’ve known them for years! But “I’m through being cool…rather forget the days we spent than try to stay afloat in shallow waters…the world that’s flying by is slick and smooth, big waves of light…last night I dreamt you called from Costa Rica, go see the volcanoes, go see the rainforests, I’ll be fine by myself…” I’ll simple words, but in memory and music they are moments and chords unforgettable. At the risk of sounding cheesy thank you Saves The Day for the many times you saved my day.

The location did not matter to the community, the Hooley could be held at home, in a school house, dance hall, or even on the boats that brought the Irish culture to America. It is not a place; it’s a state of mind and an excuse for a cheerful gathering.

Kerry Records, the producer of An Irish Hooley, is the number one promoter of Irish Music and Culture on the West Coast. Based in L.A., it is an Irish owned production company that encourages the advancement of contemporary Irish music and the spoken arts, while supporting the performance, recording and preservation of the country’s priceless music and history.

O.C. Chili Winter Trail Run Comes to O’Neill Park

This article was published on News-n-Views

We all can feel the long winter weather dragging along this year. The cool air and moisture filled clouds often make us want to cuddle up under our blankets with some warm soup and watch our favorite flicks. Well it’s officially time to kick off the sheets and hop into our running shoes! This Saturday, March 13, join the O.C. Chili Winter Trail Run to keep you motivated and fit during the cold season.

The course begins bright and early at 8:30 a.m. and will bring runners on a 5 mile trail through the scenic landscape of O’Neill Regional Park. This is a community event and features so much more than a brisk morning run. In addition to the fun-filled raffle, from 9a.m. to 11a.m. there will be a campfire and Chili Cook Off to keep runners warm, fit and well fed.

The trail run seeks to benefit Trails4All, a not for profit organization that assists in coordinating volunteer trail projects and to raise funds to support volunteer groups that undertake those projects. Trails4All is working with a network of about thirty groups, agencies and retail stores, and includes outdoor enthusiasts such as hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners and equestrians.

We all have experienced the effect of the struggling economy in our lives, but many do not consider the effect on our local recreation areas. It is estimated that over 700 miles of natural surface and trails are shared in Orange County, and although the land increases each year, the county’s budget for the park system decreases. Trails4All uses its generous donations to contribute to the maintenance and improvements of these natural resources.

The organization continues to welcome members, sponsors, donations and volunteers to help continue its efforts. Participants can be involved with trail construction, environmental clean-ups for creeks and watersheds, instructional seminars, youth programs and of course trail maintenance. Volunteers are also welcome to contribute their time at the O.C. Chili Winter Run Series and can sign up on the event website.

The March 13 run is actually the second in the O.C. Chili Winter Run Series, with the next race being held April 17. Registration prices vary and those who sign up have the option of buying a high quality fashionable t-shirt to show your commitment to your fitness and the organization’s efforts. You can find more information and past race pictures and results on the event website at www.bookthatevent.com.

Motion City Soundtrack Concert | House of Blues

“It’s been a good year, a good new beginning. I’m through with the old school so let’s commence the winning.” The music and lyrics from the song ‘Worker Bee’ amplified as the crowd exploded when Motion City Soundtrack took the stage on February 15th. The band rocked the House of Blues of Anaheim with their quirky yet stylized sound. It was the ultimate grand finale to the long holiday weekend.

The hour long 18-set with 2 encore songs was an electrifying display of energy and raw musical entertainment. The attendance was high and the audience was ecstatic to take in a mixture of old and new songs played from their near decade of band history. Classic favorites including ‘The Future Freaks Me Out,’ and ‘My Favorite Accident,’ from the group’s 2003 debut album, I Am the Movie, were instant crowd pleasers. Fans sang along and jumped in rhythm, and Motion City Soundtrack echoed their emotion.

The set continued to surprise as the band switched sporadically between the classics and sure hits from their recently released album My Dinosaur Life. It was the first time many of them had heard the new tunes live. The opening notes of songs like ‘Her Words Destroyed My Planet’ and ‘A Lifeless Ordinary,’ from the new album, showed reflex with cheers from devoted fans approving the creative outcome.

Heather Fechner and Lindsay Amanda Pre-Partying Before The Show

Heather Fechner and Lindsay Amanda Pre-Partying Before The Show

Lead vocalist and guitarist, Justin Pierre, swapped guitars between each song during the show. This ritual is one of the many unique details that added to the deliverance of a charmingly frenzied performance. His voice and on-stage personality compliments his relaxed-nerdy demeanor to help Motion City Soundtrack shine through the clutter of common pop-punk bands. Fans following the singer on twitter revealed concern for his few-day-old ankle sprain which Pierre responded with high spirits of a well state of recovery and thanks. The band remains intimately connected to their fans through their tour travels via social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace.

Justin Pierre is just one of the five talented musicians of Motion City Soundtrack. With Josh Cain on vocals and guitar, Matt Taylor, base and vocals, Jesse Johnson rocking the keyboards, and Tony Thaxton on drums, the band is an exceptionally talented five person band. The group moves on to tour internationally with their next stop in Australia, continuing to Japan, the United Kingdom and ultimately back to the east coast of the United States.

The show’s opening bands did their part to excite the fans for the talented headliners. The first in the lineup was The Swellers, a small town band from Flint, Michigan, who brought a bit of traditional punk rock seasoning to the mix. Drawing inspiration from an amalgamated origin of melodic punkers and alternative indie rock from the 90’s, the 4 member band blasted fast paced tunes from the speakers.

Seemingly viewed as the attention grabbing ‘Middle Child’ of the lineup, This Providence brought a unique and catchy flair to the venue. Dan Young, lead singer and guitarist, seemed to ignite as the curtains opened to find his ensemble glowing in the red of the stage lights with his tambourine in hand. His character came off as fantastically flamboyant as the up beats were marked with a snappy little craze. It was a dance hall rocker’s dream band with a sound that pulsated through the hearts and tapping feet of the listeners.

Motion City Soundtrack’s runner-up band, Set Your Goals, succeeded with no question appealed to the high-energy mob of onlookers. Within moments of beginning their set, stage divers and crowd surfers showed their enthusiasm for the darker drum beats and fast paced guitar jams. It has become a standard for the venue to remove fans who engage in these common punk rock concert acts, of which the House of Blues responded with a safety warning announcement after the band finished their set.

The show was a perfect performance of alternative pop-rock and roaring praise for the guys of Motion City Soundtrack and their opening crews. For more information and band tour dates please visit their website at motioncitysoundtrack.com. Don’t forget to pick up your copy of My Dinosaur Life in-stores and online at all music lovers’ outlets.

Joni Mitchell and Alberta Ballet to Perform Masterpiece in O.C.

This article was published on News-n-Views

Alive, alive, I want to get up and jive, I want to wreck my stockings in some juke box dive.” These poetic lyrics come from the song “All I Want” by multitalented artist Joni Mitchell.

The legendary folk music musician is coming to the Irvine Barclay Theater Thursday February 25th at 8 p.m. to share her collaborative masterpiece “The Fiddle and The Drum” with Orange County. The artist partners up with the Alberta Ballet and its Artistic Director Jean Grand- Maître to bring a creative performance that celebrates the marriage of art and music.

“The Fiddle and The Drum” is a semi-abstract narrative ballet that is danced in a neo-classical style set to the soundtrack of Joni Mitchell’s compelling music and most recent visual artwork. Large canvas screens will be projected with her innovative imagery, painting the atmosphere of each scene for the 29 athletic dancers of the Alberta Ballet.

Jean Grand- Maître directs the Alberta Ballet’s team of dancers as they use sensual and powerful movements to command the attention of the audience. The program is meant to fuse contemporary eclectic art forms through exploring the human spirit’s dual potential to both create and destroy. It is the timeless story of the struggle between love and hate and the capacity for both war and peace. “The Fiddle and The Drum” is an opportunity to experience a symbolic world that awakens and stirs the soul.

Joni Mitchell is a Canadian musician, songwriter and painter. After singing in small nightclubs and busking on the streets of Toronto, Mitchell set off to New York City in the 1960’s to follow the rich folk music scene of the times. After finding fame first as a songwriter, she let her soprano voice carry her to the West Coast, settling in Southern California. Inspiration came from all corners of the music industry, influenced by jazz, melding it with pop, folk and rock on her experimental albums throughout the years. Allmusic once said that the artist “may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century.”

The Alberta Ballet is a not-for-profit charitable organization in Canada, and is the country’s third largest dance company in its 43rd season. “The way we perform ballet has evolved, just like music and opera. There’s a dynamic modern energy to it, which really is very expressive of our joys and our anxieties and our lives to date,” says Director Jean Grand- Maître. The performance collaboration of “The Fiddle and The Drum” is proudly headlined at this year’s Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad.

There is no better time than now to experience the marriage of two of the most gifted artistic inspirations of our day. The show begins at 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 25. A very small number of tickets are available for Gold Seats at a price of $100, which includes VIP seating and complimentary wine or other beverages before the show. General tickets are $28. For more information or to buy tickets online please go to the Irvine Barclay Website at www.thebarclay.org.
